The people you work with make or break the work environment: salary, benefits, perks, commute, working conditions ... they all become bearable if you feel you belong with the people you work with. Of course that means that toxic people can make any work environment a hateful place.
It's easier to only seek interaction with the good ones (co-workers and managers) and to ignore or fight the toxic people. It's easier to create a 'them and us' culture to cope: by siding with those that are like us we get the support and approval we seek.
It's harder to understand the bad people, to engage them, let alone to work with them,
That's why the hallmark of excellent employees is not how they treat the good employees but how they treat the difficult ones.
